The Airline
Time flies when you're having fun!
More than 30 years ago, Rollin King and Herb Kelleher got together and
decided to start a different kind of airline. They began with one simple
notion: If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want
to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure
they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline. And you
know what? They were right.
The airline began service June 18, 1971 with flights to Houston, Dallas,
and San Antonio. Since May 2003 (through August 2003 the latest
data available) Southwest has been the number one carrier in terms of
domestic boardings. Yearend results for 2003 marked Southwest's 31st
consecutive year of profitability. Southwest became a major airline
in 1989 when it exceeded the billion-dollar revenue mark. Southwest
is the United States' only major shorthaul, low-fare, high-frequency,
point-to-point carrier.
Southwest Airlines has become the fourth largest major airline in
America. We fly more than 64 million passengers a year to 58 great
cities (59 airports) all over the Southwest and beyond. And they do
it more than 2,700 times a day.
Southwest currently operates 388 Boeing 737 jets (as of December 31,
2003).
Southwest's average passenger airfare is $87.42, and the average
passenger trip length is about 730 miles.
